The 1978 FIFA World CupTM, the eleventh round of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial FIFA World Cup, was held in Argentina between 1 and 25 June.

Argentina won the cup, beating Netherlands 3-1 in the final after extra time. The final was held at the Estadio Monumental, the home stadium of the River Plate, in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. This victory was the first World Cup title for Argentina, which became the fifth team (after Uruguay, Italy, England and West Germany) to host and world champion. Argentina, the Netherlands and Brazil won the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively. Iran and Tunisia participated for the first time in the tournament. This was also the last World Cup tournament to use the original inclusion of 16 teams. Since the first World Cup in 1930, only 15 teams (plus the host, who qualified automatically) were allowed to qualify (the defending champions also received automatic qualification from 1934 until 2002); But for the next World Cup, in Spain, FIFA expanded that tournament to 24 teams.

It takes place in Argentina from   1st
Street   to June 25, 1978Argentina were crowned world champions for the first time by beating the Netherlands in the final after extra time.
The heavy context is that of a military dictatorship, two years after the coup of March 24, 1976And it is General Videla, the head of the junta, who gives the trophy to the Argentine commander, Daniel Passarella, "El Pistolero".
This version was also controversial in its course, especially in connection with the Argentina-Peru match. Because of the goal difference, the Argentines had to score at least four goals for the Peruvians to advance to the final at Brazil's expense.

Top goalscorers:
Mario Kempes (Argentina) 6 goals
Teofilo Cubillas (Peru) 5 goals
Robert Reisenbrick (Netherlands): 5 goals
 Johan Krankel (Austria) 4 goals
